Sheboygan Police say that they’re not ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), and their officers will not be investigating or enforcing federal immigration law.
This comes after the SPD received recent reports of someone asking a teen for proof of citizenship. As it turns out, a teen was stopped while skateboarding in the middle of the street after dark, but they say that they can’t verify that the teen was contacted by a Sheboygan Police Officer.
The Department said that it’s unfortunate that the national conversation has been used to amplify fear and mistrust based upon inaccurate, second-hand information. They add that they don’t tolerate biased policing and have taken steps to minimize the impact and perceptions of bias when interacting with the community.
