Construction of a new high-voltage transmission line in Sheboygan County has been given the green light by the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin. The American Transmission Company was granted a permit to build the line along its preferred route. Known as the Plymouth Reliability Project, the twin, 138 kilovolt transmission line will run about 7 miles from ATC’s existing Elkhart Lake – Saukville line near County Highways A and V, to the Plymouth #5 Distribution Substation located between County Highway U and Sumac Road, about a mile-and-a-half west of Highway 57. The route had been the subject of a year-long process of review and discussion by the Public Service Commission between the company and its objectors, mostly the property owners living along the route on grounds including its necessity, and its adverse effects on agriculture, property values, health, the environment and aesthetics.

The approval received an immediate petition from ATC for a reopening or rehearing on a technicality related to ATC’s authority to condemn land needed for the construction – The PSC has yet to respond. For now, construction is expected to begin in the summer, with completion by 2026.
