Old Bridge over Pigeon River at Evergreen Park, Sheboygan
An unusual sewer odor caught the attention of a resident on Monday, leading to the discovery of a sanitary sewer backup affecting Sheboygan’s Evergreen Park. A blockage had formed in a portion of the sanitary sewer main involved, the product of grease discarded down drains which eventually plugged the flow and led to the overflow.
Crews immediately located and cleared that blockage and then discovered a second plug further downstream. The second obstruction was cleared on Tuesday morning, but not before some of the overflow had reached the Pigeon River and nearby low-lying areas. As the overflow area is remote, it’s believed that no people or pets were exposed to the wastewater. What could be recovered was removed to the wastewater treatment facility for proper disposal, while Pigeon River is being actively monitored by the City in cooperation with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to address potential environmental impacts. The City of Sheboygan Department of Public Works will be conducting a comprehensive review of the sewer system in Evergreen Park to identify further preventative solutions.
Formal issuance of a Public Notice was made by the City as required under Wisconsin law, and residents are being reminded not to pour fats, oils or grease down household drains, as they are a leading cause of sewer blockages and overflows
