To say that yesterday afternoon’s weather was no picnic would be an understatement as high winds and low visibility inundated Sheboygan County with a fury.
The intense cold front that passed through in the mid-afternoon generated snow squalls that briefly blocked visibility – even though only a few tenths of an inch fell. But the snow was accompanied by winds that made vehicle control difficult…and sometimes blew objects into the way. Warnings of power outages did come true in some places, but were not widespread in Sheboygan County…a few power bumps aside. Winds hit peak gusts of 46 mph near both Plymouth and Howards Grove in the afternoon and evening respectively, and by far, travelers were hardest-hit.
The Sheboygan County Sheriff responded to about a dozen crashes, and roads are still slick this morning with the city reporting worse conditions than open country. In Fond du Lac County between 1 and 8 p.m., the Sheriff responded to 41 crashes, 16 runoffs and 13 disabled vehicles, with 370 calls coming during those 7 hours.
The National Weather Service reported wind chills reaching 6 below zero early this morning, and with temperatures rising slowly and brisk winds continuing, it will feel like the mid teens at best today, but we should recover to highs in the 40s by Sunday.
