Although decreasing winds have provided some margin of safety, large portions of Wisconsin are still at elevated risk of wildfire.
The National Weather Service says that the major concern today is along and west of the I-39/90 corridor, however Sheboygan County, along with all others except those in the southeast corner of the State, are experiencing at least “high” fire danger according to the Wisconsin DNR’s Wisburn website.
On Sunday the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office warned motorists to avoid the area of County Highway “M” and Sportsman Road in the Town of Utica as a large marsh fire generated heavy smoke, noticeably scenting the air in Oshkosh, some eight miles to the northeast.
Wetter conditions are needed to reduce the danger. Forecasts give little chance of significant rain in Sheboygan County until Friday – and even that is for only a few hundredths of an inch. The DNR is encouraging people to put off any outdoor burning until significant improvement takes place, and in some areas, the DNR says that will be when snow completely covers the ground once again.
