Scammers are apparently making a direct assault on the Ten Commandments as an area church finds itself being spoofed. The New Holstein Police Department says they received a call from Holy Rosary Catholic Church, advising that someone is using the church to perpetuate a scam. The operation works via text messages indicating that Father Amadi is in need of money. The tip-off to the scam is easy to spot as the money request is in the form of Apple gift cards.
New Holstein Police have confirmed with the church that they are running no fundraising or other events involving a request for Apple gift cards, nor would the church send text messages asking for monetary donations of any kind.
As usual, anyone receiving such a request should delete it and not respond. And if you feel you have been scammed, call your local law enforcement immediately.
