If you’ve got the time – the Red Cross has the need for you to participate in their Hurricane Relief efforts. The agency is recruiting people willing to complete the necessary training and be able to commit to a two-week deployment. Prior experience is not a requirement, but those with skills such as supervision, management or organization skills, a strong desire to help others and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment are encouraged to apply.
As an example of the need, the Red Cross hosted more than 2,600 persons in 69 emergency shelters on Sunday night; by Monday that grew to 3,200 in need of emergency shelter, food and services. Given the scale of the disaster it’s expected that shelter services will likely last for weeks.
900 volunteers had already been dispatched across 10 states by Monday, and if you can see yourself being a part of shelter efforts that are likely to expand, go online to redcross.org/volunteer to sign up.
Those wanting to help but unable to volunteer can participate in other ways; the need for blood and blood products spikes during disasters, even as more than 1,500 donations were cancelled in the southeastern US. Individuals are being encouraged to donate, and you can sign up at redcrossblood.org.
Monetary donations to the American Red Cross can be used as needed to purchase supplies, food and other items, and are the fastest way to get help to those needing it. Visit redcross.org or text the word HELENE to 90999 to make a donation.
