The annual collection of autumn leaves is scheduled to begin October 7th in Sheboygan. The efforts will follow the same plan that’s been in place for several years, with the City divided into collection zones in order to accommodate the vast amounts that will be raked into the curbs and gutters. The city’s Department of Public Works said that the collection will run for seven weeks, concluding on Friday, November 22nd. The operation is an exception to the usual rule that prohibits placing anything in the gutters, and if snow, ice or freezing rain should fall the collection would be suspended.
In order to cover their grounds, the DPW has divided the city into five zones, one for each weekday. The aim is to conclude each zone in one day, but a heavy leaf fall might extend the operation into the next before beginning that day’s collection.
While the system works well when it’s dry, there’s always a risk for clogged drains if it rains, and leaf piles must not contain anything but leaves. The DPW says that residents can help limit problems by mulching leaves into the grass instead of raking, or taking them directly to the drop-off site on New Jersey Avenue.
