That harvest wagon or combine with a lineup of traffic trailing behind might be inconvenient, but they belong on the road – just like you – and every rule-of-the-road still applies. That’s the basic message law enforcement wants the public to know while Wisconsin agriculture experiences its “high season”…otherwise known as the harvest. Over the years, it’s proven to be one of the busiest and most dangerous seasons of the year for Wisconsin’s number-one industry, and safety requires that motorists do their part protecting its workers.
In Wisconsin, vehicles cannot pass what’s termed “an Implement of Husbandry”…that’s that piece of slow-moving piece of equipment in front of you…in a no passing zone. Also of concern…even in areas where passing is allowed, motorists have to consider that the farm vehicle in front of them may be turning left into a roadway or field entrance with little warning, especially if you’re not able to see that signal.
The bottom line is that Wisconsin’s rural roads are critical infrastructure that’s needed by everyone whether traveling or farming, so if you’re caught in the flow – just go with it and enjoy the countryside.
