The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign results are in, and citations and warnings numbered in the hundreds. From August 14th through September 2nd the National Highway Transportation Safety Agency partnered with local law enforcement nationwide to raise awareness through a high-visibility presence, looking for impaired and reckless driving with the hopes of reducing tragedy on the roads, especially during the Labor Day weekend.
Sheboygan County Sheriff Matt Spence said that of the 272 citations issued here nine were for Operating Under the Influence. Another 40 were accident-related, 70 were for drivers license violations, 32 were moving violations, there was 1 equipment violation, 18 safety belt citations, and another 102 various notices among that 272 total.
There were also 300 warnings issued, which Sheriff Spence said could be speeding, defective equipment or registration, but he added, “Rest assured we would not issue a warning for OWI!”
Fond du Lac County reported similar results with 249 citations including 15 OWIs, and 314 warnings were issued.
