A pair of initiatives being promoted from City Hall is making it clear that planners are serious about changing the public mindset on transportation. Concepts begun several decades ago with the appearance of bicycle lanes on streets, and growing numbers of paths that encourage pedaling and walking, has now evolved into policies that have established Sheboygan’s “Sustainability Taskforce” as part of City government, and the introduction of “Complete Streets” plans that aim to integrate non-motorized transportation and safety into planning that used to crown only cars and trucks as the “Kings of the Road.”
That push is on display this weekend as Sheboygan’s Sustainability Task Force launches the City’s first Electric Vehicle Expo at Maywood Park this Saturday. The expo will feature diverse electric vehicles including cars, bikes, low-speed vehicles and motorboats, while E-V specialists educate attendees on the challenges behind transitioning to an electric transportation economy. That free, open event takes place between 9 a.m. and noon on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Shoreline Metro, which runs Sheboygan’s bus system, is inviting people to fill out the Wisconsin Non-Driver Transportation Behavior Study, a survey that aims to take the public pulse on transportation policy when it comes to challenges faced by anyone who chooses not to, or cannot drive. Participants must be State residents at least 18 years old. That survey can be accessed through this link.
