The Sheboygan Police Department has released more information concerning an officer-involved shooting that occurred Sunday evening.
Events unfolded beginning at 6:09 p.m. Sunday when the Sheboygan Police Department responded to the report of a man brandishing a firearm in the 1500 block of North 13th Street, north of Superior Avenue.
Arriving officers approached a 23-year-old man matching the description of that referred by the caller, and while attempting to identify the subject, the man suddenly lunged at and assaulted one of the officers, taking the handgun from the officer’s utility belt. A second officer then fired at, and subsequently struck the suspect with his duty weapon. The suspect was given medical aid at the scene before being transported to a local hospital for stabilization, and eventually flown via Flight for Life to a Green Bay hospital for surgery. The officer who was assaulted sustained minor injuries – the only injuries besides the suspect among those involved.
On Monday afternoon, the Sheboygan Police Department addressed several requests for more information. They said that both officers involved in the event were placed on administrative leave. The officer who discharged his weapon is a 29-year-old male with two years of service to the SPD. The suspect remained hospitalized in Green Bay, and there were no updates to his condition.
No further information releases are scheduled at this time.
