A Fond du Lac County K9 Officer was welcomed back to the force on Thursday after being shot nearly a year ago. K9 Coordinator, Lieutenant Ryan Zitlow, said that Thursday was one of the best days, “to see Iro back on duty after what he’s gone through…”
K9 Iro suffered an estimated three, to five bullet wounds while responding to a sexual assault call on October 14th last year. The attacker, Kyle Massie, shot Iro when the K9 was released into a garage where Massie had fled in a car, leaving the dog lying in a pool of his own blood with severe wounds to much of his body. His handler, Deputy Blaine Evans, was not injured. Massie took his own life before he could be apprehended.
Iro received a blood transplant from a dog owned by a veterinarian at the Blue Pearl Animal Hospital in Appleton where he underwent surgery, and then spent 11 months on rehabilitation at UW Veterinary Care clinic in Madison before being recertified, and finally re-joining the force on Thursday.
