In the wake of troubles arising from policies that had treated some drinking establishments differently than others, the City of Sheboygan has begun discussion that could avoid such trouble in the future. The Licensing, Hearings and Public Safety Committee met a week ago, and the talks led by Alderman Joe Heidemann to establish regulations for all bars in the City focused on those serving the drinks. Committee members considered placing restrictions on bars and bartenders, including banning bartenders from drinking while on duty.
Assistant City Attorney Audrey Kratz advised that as long as there isn’t existing state legislation the City could impose a sober server ordinance. Committee Chair Zach Rust noted that there was already an ordinance proposed some years ago that could be revised to effectively address the subject. Alder Heidemann advised getting feedback from the Tavern League, bar owners, and possibly the Chamber of Commerce before moving forward with anything formal.
Last week’s discussions were just that – discussion only, and no votes were taken or policy established.
