With the Labor Day weekend now behind us, drivers are being reminded to keep the eyes on the road ahead and watch for the school bus as most school-age kids head back to class today. Those attending their first day of school today are often excited, distracted, and not putting their attention on drivers, and so it’s up to motorists to follow the laws passed to protect those young ones. That means coming to a complete stop no less than 20 feet from the bus when the red flashing warning lights are engaged. You must remain stopped until those red flashing lights are extinguished. Only if you’re on a divided highway or street with center barriers and traveling in the opposite direction can you continue without stopping. And one more reminder…Wisconsin Act 154 that went into effect this past March bumped up the standard fine for Failure to Stop for a School Bus to a more-than-double $691.
