City Inspectors in Manitowoc made an unwelcome discovery while doing a routine inspection on Tuesday. Police Lieutenant Cooper Schmidt says the inspectors were at a vacant property in the 700 block of Magnolia Avenue when they ran across a suspicious object. Manitowoc Police and the Manitowoc County Metro Drug Unit were called to check out what is described as a vessel used in the production of controlled substances. Such equipment can be contaminated with hazardous materials, and so the Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation – Clandestine Laboratory Response Team was called in to handle the safe removal of the vessel. And because of the flammability of the chemicals involved, the Manitowoc Fire Department and EMS stood by throughout the operation.
The State Lab Response Team will be testing the object to figure out the nature of the contents, and whether or not it was used to manufacture controlled substances.
