Manitowoc County is joining the several others in the region that have experienced an uptick in scam calls trying to steal people’s money.
The Manitowoc County Sheriff is warning of callers saying they have a warrant, signed by a judge that shows that a court appearance was missed and a payment is required to settle the warrant or avoid a larger fine. Ultimately, the scammers try to catch people off-guard and get the victims to send money and turn over personal information that can be used for fraud. The Sheriff says the scammers have taken to using names of current or past law enforcement officers, and even try to meet near the Clerk of Courts Office to settle the fines.
The public is being reminded that legitimate officers, banks and judicial staff will never call you to arrange payment or collect personal information, and if you feel you’ve been made a victim, call your local law enforcement as soon as possible.
