KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) – Malaysia is ready to discuss with industry groups a plan that will require social media platforms to apply for a regulatory license, its communications minister said on Tuesday, after an industry group called on the government to pause the move.
The Asia Internet Coalition (AIC) – whose members include major tech firms Google, Meta and X – had made the call in an open letter to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, citing a lack of clarity over the proposed regulations.
