There seems no limit on the ways bad actors are using to cheat people out of money. More examples are coming from Fond du Lac County, where the Sheriff has taken to social media to raise awareness in the public mind.
Most recently, potential victims are being called and asked to pay taxes on prize winnings, joining the ongoing impersonators of officers and deputies asking to be paid to get a loved one out of jail or to pay for warrants. One common thread connecting many is the condition that either cash or gift cards be used, making such payments harder to track. Some scammers have been so bold as to make pickups directly from the victim’s mailbox.
The Sheriff emphasizes that no personal information should be shared with anyone calling you, but instead contact a trusted friend or family member, your local bank or law enforcement to discuss details of the scam. The phone numbers they use can also be blocked to prevent further contact. And if you feel you’ve been scammed, call your local law enforcement as soon as possible.
