A concept that incorporates a “living as usual” design for those experiencing life with dementia has been able to take a huge step forward thanks to a generous donation. Livasu Village, a project being built in the Town of Wilson by the nonprofit Dementia Innovations of Sheboygan was granted $1.25 million by the Ruth DeYoung Kohler Community Impact Fund. The money was used to purchase 79 acres of land upon which the village of 124 privately-owned homes will be sited along with a village center, public restaurant, theater, grocery store and more. The concept is built upon an international model begun in the Netherlands in which care and support is provided by staff within the village, which is designed to de-stigmatizes dementia.
Upon making the donation, Laura Kohler said that “As stewards of Ruth’s Community Impact funds, we are proud to support Dementia Innovations’ mission.” Kohler stated that it was important to Ruth to support projects that were inclusive to all special populations, and that those living with dementia deserve to be valued, respected and continue to be included in our communities.
Dementia Innovations is currently undertaking a large capital campaign to raise funds for the infrastructure costs associated with the village.
