You may notice more than the usual sound of aircraft for the next week or so as the skies over Wisconsin host some 1,100 military personnel from the Air Force, National Guard, Marine and Navy taking part in the annual Northern Lightning Counterland training exercise underway now through the 16th.
Units from Wisconsin and a dozen other states as far ranging as California and Vermont will be stationed at Volk Field near Camp Douglas. Besides the skies overhead, the exercise also takes advantage of a large area of controllable air space over Lake Michigan for many of their maneuvers, keeping much of the action – and its noise – over unpopulated areas, but often flying over Sheboygan and surrounding counties as they travel between the Lake and Camp Douglas.
Northern Lightning is a tactical-level, joint training exercise that replicates the modern air battle space with current and future weapons platforms, incorporating some of the world’s most advanced aircraft such as the F-18 Hornet and the F-35 Lightning-II.
