The founder and CEO of one of Sheboygan’s premiere manufacturers has died at age 95. Daniel Merkel’s passing on July 31st was noted through his obituary by his family. After founding his business, the Marshfield native moved to Sheboygan with his wife, Betty who survives him along with three daughters, a daughter-in-law, as well as numerous grand, and great-grandchildren.
Merkel began the business when he realized the high cost of his daughter’s orthodontic appliances, and wished to make them available at a lower cost to consumers. According to its corporate profile, American Orthodontics grew from Merkel’s 1968 startup in Sheboygan to now employ 450 persons, selling more in one day than its first-year sales of $300,000.
Visitation for Daniel Merkel takes place from 4-6 p.m. Monday, August 12th at the Reinbold-Novak Funeral Home in Sheboygan, and at St. Dominic Catholic Church on Tuesday the 13th beginning at 9 a.m. prior to the Mass at 10 a.m.
His obituary concludes by saying that: “In lieu of flowers, please do a random act of kindness or tell someone a joke in Dan’s memory.
