There’s no Lieutenant Johnson at the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office. That’s a first hint that a scam targeting potential area victims isn’t a legitimate call. Another hint: the Sheriff’s Office doesn’t make phone calls asking for anyone to pay a fine.
The Sheriff’s Office sent notice on social media Tuesday that scammers are placing calls claiming the target missed jury duty and has to pay a fine. The person on the other end claims to be Sheriff’s Lieutenant Johnson from the Sheboygan County department, and that trouble can be avoided by paying him the fine.
The scam isn’t new, but has been making the rounds in many area counties this year. In all cases, officials say they never call to collect fines or inform people of warrants for their arrest and never accept gift cards or cyber currency for payment. If you receive such a call, just hang up.
