Even though there may be millions upon millions of them, Cicadas are considered hands-off in Wisconsin State Park properties. The Department of Natural Resources is getting reports of people harvesting the bugs at Big Foot Beach State Park in Walworth County…and that’s a violation of a state law that prohibits the capture and removal of animals, including insects, from state park properties. There are exceptions for hunting and fishing activities that are otherwise authorized by law, but these exceptions don’t apply to cicadas.
The DNR says its wardens have been instructed to educate the public first, but if needed to take enforcement action against violations. Anyone aware of other illegal harvesting of Cicadas in State Parks is encouraged to contact the DNR through their Violation Hotline online, or by texting 1-800-847-9367.
