August 9-11 has been officially announced as the dates for the 2nd Annual Sheboygan Midwest Challenge, produced by Powerboat P1. The announcement on Monday cemented the second ever event into the calendar of reasons that Sheboygan is becoming an ever-more popular summer destination in the midwest.
The return of the racing event comes along with the same two full days of world-class powerboat racing, as well as a repeat of the Downtown Block Party starting off the festivities on Friday, August 9th. The party features a showcase of powerboat entries on display on the streets of downtown Sheboygan along with food, drinks, and live music. Then on Saturday and Sunday over 50 race teams from across the globe will compete for the checkered flag with Class-1 teams reaching speeds of up to 160 mph. The event is best viewed along the lakefront at the end of South Pier Drive, although much of the area south of the Harbor will be incorporated into the race course for some of the events.
Whether viewed from the Headquarters at Deland Park, from the South Pier District or on City beaches and banks, the weekend is a major draw for the Sheboygan area economy. According to the Sheboygan Area Tourism Zone, last year’s event pumped $4.7 million worth of economic activity to the Sheboygan area, with some 43,000 people attending the three-day event.
Also last year, Sheboygan received the American Power Boat Association’s “Best Race Site Award” in its inaugural year. This year’s event is the third in the 2024 P1 Offshore series following races in Cocoa Beach, Florida, and Lake of the Ozarks. After Sheboygan, races will follow in Sarasota, Florida in September, and then in October at St. Petersburg, Florida.
