If you’ve never before heard of a “Design Charrette”, you’re not alone. However those involved in creating Sheboygan’s Waterfront and Marina Master Plan will now use the approach in order to refine exactly what that plan should entail.
According to Wikipedia, a Design Charrette is defined as “an intense period of design or planning activity”, and the Smith Group, which the City hired to develop what’s being called “a crucial project aimed at ensuring the vibrancy, accessibility, and sustainability of our waterfront for generations to come” will use a Design Charrette to involve the public in further shaping the project. The work so far builds upon input gathered from stakeholders during an April 30th public meeting. The next step in the process is the Charrette, a series of five consecutive sessions, all held at the Kiwanis Park Fieldhouse, intended to test ideas and interact with the design team, and once again the City is inviting as many as possible to participate.
The Charrette kick-off presentation and hands-on design session will be from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Monday, June 24th where the Smith Group will give an overview of the project and receive ideas from participants.
Two Open Design Studio sessions, on Tuesday the 25th from 5-7 and Wednesday the 26th from 10-Noon will allow people to observe and give feedback as designers assemble draft ideas.
The fourth session will be a public open house on Wednesday from 5-7 p.m., reviewing those ideas and draft plans along with illustrations of what those concepts might look like.
Finally, from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday the 27th, the Design Charrette wraps up with a progress presentation of what was accomplished.
