Two young girls have lost their lives after the ATV they were operating was struck by a car while apparently crossing a roadway.
The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office reports responding to the accident on Bonnie View Road near County Highway 44 in the Town of Utica at around 12:41 p.m. on Tuesday where a car had struck an ATV in the roadway. Responders found the two occupants of the ATV in the roadway with severe injuries and immediately began life-saving measures, however one victim died at the scene while the other died later at the hospital. They were identified as 11-year-old Mesa Fredenhagen and 7-year-old Kennedi Harris, both from Oshkosh.
Investigators say driver of the car who struck the ATV immediately called 911 and, along with her 13-year-old son, began to render first aid despite her own minor injuries.
Social media reports suggested that the girls were crossing the road in order to see horses on the other side. According to Wisconsin State Law, operation of ATVs on and around public roads is restricted and, in most cases, illegal. However allowances are made for crossing roadways. Still, the State prohibits use of ATVs by anyone under the age of 12 and without a valid ATV safety certificate.
