2023 was another record-breaker when it comes to the impact of tourism on the Sheboygan County economy. The Wisconsin Department of Tourism released a summary of how tourism grew and prospered over the past two years on Tuesday.
Sheboygan County was no outlier from state trends, as last year’s $465 million total impact was 5.7% higher than in 2022. Direct visitor spending rose 5-1/2 percent, up to $281.1 million last year. Tourism employed 3,378 people in Sheboygan County in 2023, a growth of 0.8%, while generating $110.4 million in labor income, up 1.4% over 2022. Revenue generated in the tourism sector amounted to $32.5 million in State and Local taxes, nearly 5 percent (4.9%) higher than the previous year. Among surrounding counties, only Calumet showed greater growth in total economic impact at 7.8%.
In total, spending among Wisconsin’s 72 counties last year generated $25 billion, surpassing 2022’s record of $23.7 billion by 5.4 percent according to Secretary Anne Sayers. 2023’s 113 million visits represented growth of almost two million more than the previous year. Nearly 46 million of those visits were overnighters, the highest ever…and those visitors spend nearly three times as much as day-trippers.
