With “World Blood Day” approaching this Friday, June 14th, the American Red Cross in Milwaukee is encouraging donors to give blood or platelets in recognition of the event. World Blood Day is meant to raise awareness of the need for a safe, diverse and stable blood supply while recognizing volunteer blood donors. Donations are crucial to that supply, and with record-breaking summer travel and severe weather conditions expected to persist all season long, the Red Cross is anticipating fewer people at blood collection sites, putting even more importance upon those who do show up. And while all types are needed, type O blood and platelets are especially important. Type O-negative is the universal blood type needed for emergency transfusions and for immune deficient infants, while platelets are crucial to stop bleeding in emergency cases.
The Red Cross is offering an incentive to donors who come in now through the end of the month in the form of a $15 e-gift card to a merchant of choice. To find more information visit RedCrossBlood.org.
