Alliant Energy recently announced that Sheboygan’s Edgewater Generating Station, which has provided electricity by burning coal since 1931, will transition to natural gas as a fuel source in 2028.
The plans were announced about two weeks ago, a move Alliant says will take place after receiving needed regulatory approvals. Once it’s converted, Edgewater will complement a significant renewable fleet that already includes 1,100 Megawatts of solar generation, 150 MW through the Kossuth Wind Farm, and the approval to add nearly 275 MW of battery storage.
With the elimination of coal, one questions our listeners and readers of WHBL online pondered was if the iconic twin stacks of the Edgewater plant, something needed for coal, but not natural gas, would remain as part of Sheboygan’s skyline. We contacted Alliant’s Manager for External Communications, Cindy Tomlinson, to see if we will continue to see those stacks. Her reply: “At this time the stacks will remain.”
