While the 4th of July is synonymous with fireworks, the Sheboygan Police Department is warning against the possession or use of them within city limits.
Independence Day is now exactly 4 weeks away, but those planning to celebrate in Sheboygan are being advised to leave the fireworks to the experts. Municipal codes leave no room for error, defining fireworks that you may not display – or even possess – as “anything manufactured, processed or packaged for exploding, emitting sparks or combustion, which does not have another common use. Exceptions are made for fuels and lubricants, firearm cartridges or shotgun shells, matches, lighters, lanterns, model rocket engines, and tobacco or tobacco products. So even those toy snakes, sparklers and cap-gun caps are illegal in the city.
Confusion sometimes occurs, since surrounding townships often allow fireworks that are permitted by state law, and even those allowances can vary. But confusion can be expensive within city limits, as you could pay out from $100 up to $1,000 per violation along with the court costs, and could even be jailed for up to 60 days on each count. The best advice…leave it to the pro’s who will dazzle the skies on the lakeshore.
