A Sheboygan man suspected in the stabbing of another was shot by a Sheboygan Police Officer on Friday evening after he charged police with the weapon following lengthy attempts to negotiate his surrender.
According to a release from the SPD, the events began unfolding shortly after 5 p.m. Friday afternoon when they received reports of two men fighting at a residence in the 1400 block of Michigan Avenue. Responding officers found that a 48-year-old Sheboygan man who lived there had been stabbed by another resident of the same apartment. The victim of the stabbing was transported by Sheboygan Fire Department ambulance to a local hospital for treatment, and has since been released.
Officers engaged the 32-year-old suspect, still armed with the knife, with commands to come out of the apartment without success. After nearly two hours of negotiations, the man appeared outside the apartment, still armed with the knife. Police reports indicate that he proceeded to charge at the officers, who then retreated.
After attempting less lethal means of incapacitating the suspect, one officer fired their handgun, striking the subject and disabling him. The suspect was taken by flight for life to a Milwaukee-area hospital where he was expected to undergo surgery, and no other injuries were reported. Police remained on the scene where the investigation was turned over to the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office. Police say that there is no ongoing risk to the public.
