Fire struck a home just west of Kewaskum on Saturday morning, injuring six persons and shutting down a key highway for hours.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office got the 911 call from the homeowner just before 8 a.m. Saturday, reporting that three persons were trapped inside the building just west of the Village on Highway 28. A Kewaskum police officer who arrived first helped several area residents remove those three through a broken window, and the fire was upgraded to a “box level” fire, drawing departments from as far away as West Bend, Campbellsport, Theresa and others.
The State Patrol shut down Highway 28 for around five hours while firefighters worked to control the blaze which completely destroyed the home and its contents. Two of the residents were treated for minor injuries at the scene while another was transported for hospitalization due to smoke inhalation, as was the responding Police Officer. One of the Good Samaritans had minor cuts while another needed hospital treatment for a hand laceration. One of the family’s dogs also perished in the fire, which remains under investigation.
