The odds of being ticketed for failure to use your seat belt have gone up. That’s due to the annual “Click It or Ticket” campaign, a nationwide effort to increase awareness of seatbelt use and safety on the road.
From now until June 2nd, officers will be watching for those not using their seat belts, which is required by law, and issuing citations to those in violation of that law. In Wisconsin, all drivers and passengers are required to buckle up, and for children a child safety seat that’s proper for their age and size must also be used. Penalties are higher for transporting unrestrained children, and passengers can also be cited.
While officials say the goal isn’t simply to issue citations, educating the community on the lifesaving benefits of seat belt use is primary. Most people do use the devices, but a 2023 survey of Wisconsin motorists revealed that 8% still don’t wear seat belts. And while Click It or Ticket runs May 20th through June 2nd this year, officials hope the campaign results in better use – and more safety on the roads – all year long.
