The plaintive strains of “Amazing Grace” could be heard above the wind in Sheboygan as clocks chimed midnight last night. The presentation was part of a statewide “Midnight Piper” event that remembers and honors fallen law enforcement officers as part of National Peace Officer Memorial Day. In Sheboygan County, pipers joined the simultaneous chorus from both the Police Department and the Sheriff’s Office as three local officers were remembered.
Sheriff Lieutenant Leroy Nennig was killed on August 15th, 2004 when he was struck by a vehicle while assisting to control another vehicle on fire.
Sheboygan Police Officer Theodore Husting was shot and killed while investigating a burglary in progress on March 27, 1937.
Special Officer Charles Freiherr was struck and killed by a switch engine while patrolling the downtown rail yards. He’d served only two months when he lost his life on September 6, 1895.
Three officers gone, but not forgotten.
