Margarete Martha Uhlig passed away May 11, 2024. She was born to Ude and Hanna (Grabowski) von der Pütten on May 14, 1928, in Gadderbaum, Germany.
Margarete grew up in Eckardtsheim, Germany, in a family of five children. She went to school for kindergarten and then for an additional eight years. She completed her apprenticeship as a seamstress in Schloss Holte. After the war she completed her master craftsman’s examination and then worked as a self-employed Master Tailor, her tailoring workshop being in her parents’ home. After immigrating to the United States, she worked for over 20 years in the Tailoring Department of Art Imig’s as a Master Tailor. She did many sewing projects and alterations out of her home for most of her life.
On July 6, 1957 Margarete married Guenther Gottfried Uhlig in Eckhardtskirche. Finding no good options for housing in the war-torn country, Margarete and Guenther immigrated to the United States in February 1958, being sponsored by Margarete’s brother Friedrich von der Pütten. The trip included a ten-day voyage by boat across the Atlantic, and then train rides from New York to Chicago, and then eventually to Sheboygan.
She was a member of Zion Covenant Church (previously Zion United Church of Christ) for over 60 years.
Margarete is survived by her two children, Doris Uhlig Theune (Marc) of Sheboygan, Karl Uhlig (Rochelle) of Clemmons, NC, four grandchildren, Michael John Theune (Lindsay Semph) of Chicago, Il, Allison Margaret (Damon) Card of Raleigh, NC, Monika Joyce Uhlig-Mitchell of Clemmons, NC, and Benjamin Max Uhlig (Angéle) of San Francisco, CA, two great grandchildren, Ainsley Grace and Dylan Marie Card, two siblings, Elisabeth Hilbig and Gerhard (Elsbeth) von der Pütten, both of Germany, sisters-in-law Renate von der Pütten (Sheboygan), Wanda Uhlig, Renate (Guenther) Niggemann (both of Germany), many nieces and nephews, and other family and friends in the United States and Germany. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Guenther, and siblings Friederich von der Pütten and Hanelore Berger.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. at Zion Covenant Church on Friday, May 17, 2024, corner of Sixth and St. Clair Avenue, Pastor Chris McKnight officiating. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in her name for Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice and Zion Covenant Church.
Olson Funeral Home and Cremation Service has been entrusted with Margarete’s arrangements.
