Sheboygan County is hoping that a state grant will improve the experience for those seeking a thrill by visiting a nursing home. That does sound ironic, but in fact, Rocky Knoll – the iconic Sheboygan County Health Care facility tucked into the fringes of the Kettle Moraine, has three mountain bike trails winding through the property. When the County Planning, Resources, Agriculture and Extension Committee meets on Tuesday, discussion will center on the application for a State Stewardship Local Assistance Grant for another two sections known as “flow trails” to be added to the system.
County Planner Aaron Brault said creation of the current 5-mile system began with a grant that funded construction of the trails by crews from the Wisconsin Conservation Corps. Those trails opened in 2019. The new grant being applied for would enable a plan developed through a partnership between the County and the Sheboygan Cycling Club that would add the flow trail sections to the property. Flow trails are designed for bikers to let gravity largely replace the need for pedaling. The Cycling Club which has already worked with the City on the Evergreen Park trails, was the driving force behind the current grant application, and would also supply a portion of matching funds if the grant is approved.
The committee meets at 3:30 on Tuesday at the UW Extension Office to go over the proposal, with action by the full County Board expected at its May 21st meeting.
