Many dogs are considered family members, but a dog named “Knox” has a much bigger family than most, and he also works for them, the people of Manitowoc County. Knox is the newest K9 Officer with the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Department.
Knox, now just under a year-and-a-half of age, took over duties when Deputy Chris Hemauer retired his former K9 partner, Leon, this past October 1st. Knox, who was born in Germany, and acquired through an anonymous donation, began training with Hemauer the next day, and last week Friday was officially welcomed to the team. But his contributions to the force started while he was only a month into the partnership.
Last November, K9 Knox located a handgun in tall grass which had been discarded by a suspect. In a separate incident, a drug sniff at a local hotel helped apprehend a suspect and their contraband. And just last month, Knox tracked and located a suspicious man lurking around properties in Michicot, resulting in several charges being filed.
Not bad for one not even 18 months old – but you can give some credit for that to Steinig Tal Kennels near Campbellsport, which trains police dogs and which prepared Knox as a dual-purpose deputy, specializing in drug detection, scent specific tracking, area, building and evidence searches, and handler protection.
