The American Red Cross is asking the public to consider donating blood or platelets during the month of May. Observed as “Trauma Awareness Month”, the organization says that it’s a reminder that hospitals need to be prepared for all transfusion needs, including emergencies. At this time, Type “O” blood donors and donors giving platelets are especially needed. Type O negative is the universal blood type and what emergency room personnel reach for when there’s no time to cross-match with a patient in an emergency. O Positive is the most-used type because any Rh-positive patient can receive it. As for platelets, those are often needed to help with clotting in cases of massive bleeding.
The Red Cross is offering a few incentives to donors during May. Those donating this month will get a coupon for a free haircut by email, and those donating through May 19th will receive a $10 e-gift card to a merchant of choice, and will be automatically entered for a chance to win a trip for two and VIP racing experience to the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series and Xfinity Races at Darlington Raceway on Labor Day Weekend.
