The caller says you’ve missed jury duty, and in Wisconsin that could result in fines and jail time for contempt of court. Some who get that call will end up settling over the phone in order to avoid arrest. Problem solved!? No, because it’s all a scam and it’s circulating nearby.
The Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office says they’ve received several complaints regarding such a scam. The caller claims to be a law enforcement officer who says you can expect to be apprehended if you don’t settle the bill right away. But the Sheriff says they never discuss or take payment for citations or warrants over the phone, and if you get the call, hang up right away and don’t follow any instructions you’re given.
The Sheriff also added that they’re happy to verify any legitimate call in case you hung up on a real deputy, and you CAN do that over the phone. The Sheriff’s non-emergency phone number is: 262-284-7172
