Washington County Sheriff Deputies were posted at the gate, but there was no lockdown at the Shalom Wildlife Zoo on Monday. Sheriff Martin Schulteis said that newspaper accounts out of West Bend had mischaracterized actions taken after a report was received of a suicidal man heading to the zoo about 9 miles southwest of Random Lake to “say goodbye” to his family who was visiting there.
The Sheriff said that deputies were posted at the entrance Monday morning as a precaution while other deputies were checking area routes for the 37-year-old man from the Fox Valley area. Visitors to the zoo at the time included school groups, and zoo management was notified as a precaution by the Sheriff, but no lock-down was suggested.
The man was eventually located in a traffic stop on Highway 28 west of Kewaskum shortly before noon. The man had stabbed himself in the abdomen and taken numerous medications. He was taken into protective custody and is undergoing medical treatment and a mental health evaluation.
