A surge in scam phone calls, supposedly from law enforcement, is being reported across several counties. The Sheboygan Police Department took to social media on Thursday reporting that a resident was contacted by a caller claiming to be from, or affiliated with, the Sheboygan Police Department soliciting donations and asking for credit card information. The SPD emphasizes that they do not call residents for donations or ask for a credit card or payment as a part of that. The only occasions they accept payment information is if a person calls the police to pay a citation or pay for an animal license.
Also on Thursday, the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office put out a warning after receiving multiple complaints from citizens reporting threatening calls. The caller claims that a judge had signed a warrant, and pressured the victim for personal information and money to settle it. In those cases the scammers used names of past and current officers in order to gain the victim’s compliance. They also reiterated that neither they, a bank or judicial staff will ever ask for personal information or payment over the phone.
In both cases, officials advise anyone who receives such a call to hang up. If you have doubts, or feel you’ve fallen victim to the scammers, call your local law enforcement agency directly. And if you offered credit card information, call that credit company right away.
