The weather often disagrees with the calendar…as evidenced by today’s spring snow…but a moratorium on utility disconnection for non-payment of bills has a hard expiration date of April 15th. Anyone facing the possibility of life without heat or electricity is being urged to make arrangements to settle the bills before that day.
Utilities are prohibited from disconnection for non-payment of bills between November 1st and April 15th, and so far this fiscal year some 145,000 Wisconsin households have received $74 million from the Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program to keep the energy flowing according to the Secretary of the state’s Department of Administration, Kathy Blumenfeld, who said that more critical assistance is still available. But she added that customers should first try setting up deferred payment plans directly with their utility – something the state requires of public utilities, but not from Municipal utilities. And if agreement can’t be reached, then the WHEAP program can ensure the home stays warm, even when the weather doesn’t agree with the calendar.
