The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is once again requesting that the public refrain from outdoor burning due to a high fire danger in the state. The latest assessment puts Sheboygan County along with most of the southern third of Wisconsin in a โLowโ risk category, but from Manitowoc, Calumet and Winnebago Counties to the north and west, a โHighโ to โVery Highโ risk exists.
The DNR noted that some northern Wisconsin regions have gone more than 30 days without precipitation and, combined with low humidity and brisk winds, the danger of fire has increased significantly for the weekend into early next week.
Over 80 wildfires have drawn response from the DNR in the past week, with two fires now burning in Adams County, and one each in Price and Lincoln Counties as of Friday afternoon. The 182 acres burnt over the past week bring total fire acreage this year to over 500, caused by 244 separate fires.
Besides being asked to avoid any unnecessary outdoor burning, outdoor enthusiasts are being asked to exercise extra care when using off-road vehicles and equipment that may cause sparks and fire, and limit the outdoor use of power tools to the early morning or late evening hours to avoid sparks.
