Rains might not always be welcomed – especially when affecting weekend plans, but recent rains along with more in the forecast are having a big effect when it comes to wildfire danger.
This week began with all of southeastern Wisconsin at high risk for fire, but a round of thunderstorms on Monday evening took a big bite out of that risk. Right now the entire southern half of the state – roughly south of Highway 29 – is given a moderate risk by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Only nine counties in the far northwest are in high risk, with much of the northeast given “low” chances of trouble from wildfires.
The DNR does have burn restrictions in place over much of the northwest half of the state, since sparks from burn barrels or brush can still spread. That’s not the case here in Sheboygan County, and with another half inch or more rain expected around here on Friday, we should be safe from wildfires for now.
