A Fond du Lac Psychiatrist was given a stiff sentence on Monday for his role in illegally prescribing controlled substances. The 4-year stay in prison was handed down in federal court by US District Judge Brett Ludwig, who described Doctor John D. Whelan’s crime as an “extremely serious drug offense,” in which Whelan conspired to distribute controlled substance prescriptions in exchange for cash, making more than a quarter of a million dollars in the process. The judge noted that “If someone had cash, Mr. Whelan was willing to sell them controlled substances regardless of their actual medical need and regardless of whether the individuals were simply abusing these drugs.”
Whelan pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to distribute controlled substances and lying to federal agents. Following his 48 month prison term, Whelan will spend another 3 years on supervised release.
