While Texas is currently being scorched by historic wildfires, Wisconsin might seem to be safely out of the danger zone. But that’s not been the case, with the Department of Natural Resources having responded to 138 wildfires burning nearly 300 acres already this year. That compares to the 10-year average of four fires burning two acres at this point in time. According to the DNR, the top cause of wildfires this year has been people burning debris.
While no locations southeast of a Green Bay – Madison – Dubuque line have been affected by wildfires so far this year, the current danger of wildfires is high in all of southeastern Wisconsin as dry ground cover is exposed to low humidities and brisk winds. The DNR emphasized that the situation can change quickly, and the public needs to pay close attention to conditions before considering any outdoor burning.
