Both the Ozaukee and Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Offices are reporting attempts to scam people out of money by impersonating their officers.
The scammers are able to spoof telephone numbers, making caller ID display a real Sheriff’s number, and sometimes use a real officer’s name. But unlike a real Sheriff’s officer, a payment is demanded via pre-paid gift or debit cards, or even cash in order to satisfy a warrant, to avoid being arrested, or to bail out a family member or friend. Those things will never happen if a real warrant exists, and instead of a phone call, contact would be made in-person.
Anyone receiving such a call should hang up immediately and should never give out personal information such as a Social Security or credit card number. If you’re in doubt, call the law enforcement agency in question. For more information visit this webpage from the FBI.
