A $540,000 grant to Lakeland University from the Kohler Trust for the Arts and Education will fund three student-centered programs and initiatives, and enable improvements to Lakeland’s Bradley Theatre. The award was announced on Monday by Lakeland President Beth Borgen, who said that the grant will help create the next generation of leaders and contributing citizens in the region. Borgen noted that the Kohler Trust has long been an important partner with LU, and expressed gratitude for its ongoing support.
Funds granted to the Kohler Teaching Scholars program will be used to award $5,000 annual scholarships to three incoming first-year Black, Indigenous and People of Color students destined to become teachers in the Sheboygan Area School District. Remaining funds will be directed through scholarships towards similar students interested in dual-credit education courses in high school, as well as BIPOC paraprofessionals considering four-year education degrees through Lakeland’s Kellet School.
Four students are selected annually as Sheboygan County Scholars, and funds directed through that program are intended to retain the area’s most promising young people, preparing them for future leadership positions within the region.
The Lakeland Promise Program provides qualified Wisconsin students full tuition and fees for four years without cost, and currently supports more than 70 Wisconsin students with high financial need.
Finally, the 37-year-old Bradley Theatre will be equipped through the Kohler Trust with a new lighting system to improve the experience for Lakeland’s various artists, speakers, music ensembles and theatre productions.
