Lloyd TerMaat is a man who lives his faith by example, and his 40 years of helping the disadvantaged in the Milwaukee area will be recognized today at the State Capitol in Madison.
Each legislator has the chance to nominate someone in their district once during each 2-year session as a “Hometown Hero”, and 26th District Representative Terry Katsma said that Lloyd was an easy choice, having observed TerMaat’s life of mission firsthand for a long time. Katsma told WHBL News that “I’ve known Lloyd for, probably, decades, and he has this trailer ministry where he picks up beds, tables, couches, chairs from folks in Sheboygan County, and takes his 14-foot trailer down to Milwaukee’s inner city to folks who have next to nothing, and delivers it to them.”
Katsma said that TerMaat has developed relationships with many local furniture dealers and, along with donations from area residents has kept the goods flowing…with plenty of help. “He’s a really humble guy, a former carpenter, and he’d be the first to say ‘It’s not just me doing this’, he needs helpers.”
Those helpers, in large part, are fellow members of the First Reformed Church in Cedar Grove. And today, a busload of those helpers and friends are heading to Madison, not to distribute furniture, but to honor TerMaat for his life of service on his special day.
